The slabs have been selected, the templates are complete, and the big day is finally approaching: installation day. At SuperFly Stone, we strive to make the installation of your new granite, quartz, or marble countertops as seamless and stress-free as possible.
While our professional crews handle the heavy lifting, there are several steps you can take to ensure the day goes smoothly and your new surfaces are installed perfectly. Here is our essential homeowner's checklist for countertop installation day.
1. Clear the Path
Our installation teams will be carrying heavy, bulky stone slabs into your home. To ensure their safety and protect your property, please clear a wide, unobstructed path from the entry point to the installation area.
- Remove small rugs, plants, or decorative items from hallways and entryways.
- If you have pets, please secure them in a separate room or a fenced yard during the installation.
- If you have young children, ensure they remain well away from the work area and the path of the installers.
2. Empty Your Cabinets
While it might seem like you only need to clear the countertops, we strongly recommend emptying your base cabinets as well.
- Dust protection: Even with modern equipment, fabrication adjustments and drilling for faucets can create fine dust. Emptying cabinets protects your cookware and dishes.
- Access: Our team may need to reach inside the cabinets to secure the countertops or the sink.
- Protection: Heavy slabs being lowered into place can create subtle vibrations; it's better to have fragile items stored safely elsewhere.
3. Confirm Your Sink and Appliances
If you are providing your own sink, faucet, or appliances (like a cooktop or slide-in range), please ensure they are on-site and available for the installers to reference.
- Sink installation: Most undermount sinks are installed by our team at the same time as the countertops.
- Faucet holes: We typically drill faucet holes on-site to ensure they are perfectly centered with your sink and aligned with your plumbing.
- Appliance fit: If you have a slide-in range or a cooktop, our team will need to verify the fit against the new stone.
4. Plan for Plumbing and Electrical Disconnection
Our installers are stone experts, but we are not licensed plumbers or electricians.
- Disconnect: Ensure your existing sink, faucet, and cooktop are disconnected before our team arrives.
- Reconnect: You will need to schedule a plumber to return (typically the following day) to reconnect your sink, faucet, and dishwasher. We recommend waiting at least 24 hours to allow the adhesives and silicone to cure fully before putting weight on the sink or running water.
5. Be Ready for Decisions
We require an adult with decision-making authority to be present at the start and end of the installation.
- Seam approval: If your project requires seams, our team will review the placement and appearance with you.
- Final walkthrough: Once the installation is complete, we'll do a final walkthrough with you to ensure everything meets your expectations and to review care and maintenance instructions.
6. Protect Your Floors
While our teams take great care, moving hundreds of pounds of stone is a major operation. If you have newly installed or particularly delicate flooring, you may want to lay down additional protection (like Ram Board or heavy cardboard) along the path to the kitchen.
What to Expect During the Installation
A typical kitchen installation can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours, depending on the complexity and the number of slabs. There will be some noise, some dust (though we work hard to minimize it), and a lot of activity.
Once the stone is in place, leveled, and secured, our team will clean the surfaces and apply a sealer if your material requires it (most natural stones do).
